At the beginning of last month Eldest and I were watching tv together. I was knitting, he was on the computer, it was all very companionable. Then ....

"You know," he said casually, "it occurs to me that in a few weeks I won't have to listen to you any more."

"You know," I replied, "it occurs to me that in a few weeks I'm no longer obligated to pay for your college education."

There was a brief pause.

"I could listen to you for a few more years," he said.
